Symptoms of Postnasal Drip
Postnasal Drip is described as excessive mucus production from the nasal mucosa. This mucus gathers at the back of your nose or throat and results in:
- Sensation of mucus falling from the back of the nose
- Hoarse voice
- Chronic cough
- Bad breath
- Hawking and desire to clear throat frequently
- A sore throat
- Painful ear infections
Causes of Postnasal Drip
It can happen due to multiple reasons which include:
- Flu and Cold: They are caused by viral infections affecting the throat and the nose. Cold is less severe than flue. They can result in postnasal dripping with other key symptoms of nasal discharge, nasal congestion, sneezing, body pains, sore throat and fever.
- Sinusitis: It stands for the inflammation and swelling of air filled spaces in skull. It can result in PND along with other symptoms including nasal blockage, nasal discharge, headache, pain/tenderness around nose, cheeks, eyes, forehead, sore throat and cough.
- Nasal Allergy (Allergic Rhinitis): it stands for allergic response to a specific allergen which includes pollens, dust mites, resulting in runny nose, sneezing, stuffed nose, itchy watery eyes. Postnasal drip may be associated with these symptoms.
- Rhinitis (Non-allergic): This type of rhinitis causes the same symptoms as one can face during the allergic rhinitis but it is without any allergic reaction.
- Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS): in this condition, the wall divides the nasal cavity into two halves take the place of one side. Consequently, one side of nasal cavity gets small that makes the mucus drainage difficult resulting in PND.
- Gastric Reflux: It is a back flow of stomach acid from the stomach into the esophagus, throat and mouth.
- If an object stuck in nose especially with children can result in it
- Medications: Some medicines which include high blood pressure, birth control pills can cause postnasal drip
- Weather Change: Changing weather, dry air, cold weather and eating some high spicy food items
- Pregnancy
- Swallowing Disorder: In this case, the main problem is not in excessive production of mucus but an inadequate clearance of the throat instead
Pathophysiology
A small amount of mucus is produced by our nose and throat on a continuous level. There are three functions of this mucus. First of all, the nasal membrane remains moist, second of all, it filters and traps any inhaled foreign matter such as bacteria or virus and lastly it fights infection. Everyone swallows this mucus unknowingly. When its production increases because of any reason, it starts gathering in the back of throat. When it becomes thick or excessive in nature, it drips down the throat from the back of nose and one notices it. As a result, it activates the receptors in the respiratory tract causing the protective cough due to this irritation.
Lifestyle Management Tips
- Stay Hydrated: Take warm drinks including warm soup, hot tea. It will not only thin the mucus but also keep you hydrated
- If you have allergies, use dust mite-proof cover for pillows and mattresses. Use hot water to wash your bedsheets, and pillows on a regular basis
- Sleep with head elevated to drain the mucus
- If PND is due to acid reflux, do not consume spicy food, the last meal of the day should be consumed at least 3 hours before going to bed.
