Firstly the virus was found in Pteropid Fruit Bats of Pteropodidae family. According to the first documented outbreak of Nipah virus, it was in Malaysia and was leaving 100 dead at the time in 1998. In humans, the mortality rate is very high. According to the past statistics of outbreaks, almost 50-70 percent of people infected will die. Almost less than 600 cases of human infection of Nipah virus were reported till to the date globally. Almost 60 percent of them died.

Diagnosis of Nipah Virus Infection
In cases of an epidemic and high risk group, it should be suspected in persons displaying signs of illness and soon diagnosis should be started with the help of (RT-PCR) or Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction by taking the sample from throat swab or cerebrospinal fluid which directly detects protein viruses. Viral RNA can be isolated from the saliva of affected or infected patient.
IgM and IgG antibody detection are only possible if the patient has outlived the NiV infection. It is because most of the patients succumb to death even before this antibody occurs in the blood. So it is possible in those patients who have outlived and are on recovery phase and had not done RT-PCR for diagnosis. So in order to confirm the onset of this infection in those patients this antibody IgM and IgG tests are done.
And in those cases who succumb to death or suspected of death from Nipah virus infection, an immunohistochemistry of tissue collected during the autopsy is done on those dead bodies. It is beneficial for getting the exact numbers of death and also establish the scale of the epidemic.
