What is Hydronephrosis?

Hydronephrosis stands for the swelling of one or both kidneys that occurs when urine cannot drain from the kidneys properly to the bladder, consequently it starts to build up in the kidneys. In most cases, it develops in one kidney but can develop in both kidneys too. Homeopathic remedies for hydronephrosis not only provide symptomatic relief to the patient but also solves the problem. It can develop in any age group, but children can be affected with this condition during infancy or during ultrasound before the baby is born.

The urine is accumulated in the kidneys then it passes down through the ureter into the urinary bladder where it stores it until it gets the signal of emptying it with urethra. If the urine remains in your kidneys or back flows, there are high chances of developing this condition.

What are the Causes of Hydronephrosis?

It itself is not a disease, it can develop due to internal and external conditions that disturbs the process of urinary system.

Blockage in Urinary Tract

In most cases, it occurs due to the blockage or obstruction in the urinary tract. Blockage mostly appears in the ureters (the tubes that cast out urine from the kidneys) can result in this condition. This blockage may be a result of kidney stone, but can also develop due to blood clot or scar tissue. The blockage in the ureter may cause backflow of urine in the kidney and result in swelling. Other causes of blockage can be a twist or bend in ureteropelvic junction (meeting point of ureter and pelvis of kidney), BPH Benign prostate hyperplasia (prostate enlargement) in men can result in obstruction of the urethra, tumors in pelvic region may cause pressure on the urinary tract and pregnancy may also cause compression of urethra due to the growing fetus. At times, it can also develop due to narrowing of ureter because of an injury or infection.

Vesicoureteral Reflux

The next main cause of hydronephrosis is vesicoureteral reflux. In this case, the valve present at the junction of the urethra and bladder does not work properly. It results in the backward flow of urine into the kidneys. The normal process is, urine drains from kidney to ureter then bladder to urethra and out of our body. When the backward flow of urine develops which is the wrong path of the flow of urine then it can result in having problems emptying the kidney and eventually the swelling arises.

Apart from these causes, it can also develop due to the damage to the nerves around the bladder, structural abnormalities of the junctions between kidney, ureter and bladder and they can be birth defects that can cause hurdle in normal urination.

What are the Symptoms of Hydronephrosis?

This condition may not always develop symptoms, when it does it can be:

• Frequent urination
• Painful urination
• Incomplete drainage of urine (unable to empty the bladder)
• Urgent desire to pass urine
• Pain in the flank
• Back pain that can radiate to the groin or lower abdomen
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Fever

Symptoms in babies:

• Reduced energy levels
• Recurrent UTIs
• Not feeding well
• Irritability
• Abdomen pain
• Hematuria
• Fever

People suffering from Hydronephrosis are more likely to develop urinary tract infections. The sign of symptoms of UTI are burning while passing urine, painful urination, constant desire to pass urine, an urgency to urinate, weak urine flow/stream, cloudy urine, pus or blood in urine, scanty urine, flank pain, backache, fever, lower abdominal pain, chills, vomiting and nausea.

Complications

If urinary tract infection is not addressed properly there are great chances of developing serious condition such as infection of the kidney (pyelonephritis). If the hydronephrosis left untreated then it can cause permanent kidney damage.
