Introduction and History: It is one of the immortal legacies of Dr. Hahnemann in Materia Medica Pura. It is an extremely useful medicine and it deserves the name of Nerve Tonic according to Dr. Hughes in the book Manual of Pharmacodynamics. It has marked debility and prostration which is similar to all other acids.

Preparation: Dilutions are made from the crystals of Phosphoric Acid.

Constitution and Physiognomy: It is ideal for:

1. Persons of originally strong constitutions, who have become debilitated by loss of vital fluids, violent acute diseases, sexual excessess, chagrin or long succession of moral emotions.
2. Persons of mild temperament.
3. Children and youngsters who have grown quickly tall, slender and slim with pain in the back and limbs as if beaten; growing pains.

Ailment From: From loss of vital fluids, phosphates in urine, care, homesickness, chagrin, grief, disappointment in love and affection.

Seat of Action (Pharmacodynamics): It mainly acts on the brain, nerves, blood, kidneys, bones, mucous membranes, male and female genitals or sexual organs.

Physio-pathological Changes (Pathology)

1. It causes mental and physical debility but the mental symptoms are first to grow.
2. The medicine runs from mentals to physical, from brain to muscles.
3. It also causes haemorrhages, digestive issues and inflammation of bones.

Characteristic Mental Symptoms (Psychology)

1. Person is LISTLESS, DULL, APATHETIC, INDIFFERENT to affairs of his/her own life, prostrated and stupefied with sadness.
2. Aversion to talking. Unable to collect thoughts or find the right word.
3. Difficult comprehension. Ill effects of grief and mental shock.
4. Delirium with great stupefaction.
5. Answers gradually but correctly.
6. Homesickness with an inclination to weep.
7. Dread of future, broods over one’s condition. Pining with emaciation.
8. Person is abashed, sad; despair of cure with loss of vital fluids.
9. Person is greatly distressed by guilt of the act instead.

Characteristic Physical Guiding Symptoms

Headache: Headache in back side of the head and nape of neck, extends from back to front, crushing weight on vertex from long lasting grief or exhausted nerves, of school going girls from eye strain, overuse of eyes, of students who are growing rapidly; aggravated from least motion, noise especially music; better from lying.

Debility: Debility after violent acute diseases; night sweats

Typhoid, delirium, muttering: Person lies in a stupor, unconscious of all that is going on around him. When he is aroused, is fully conscious, answers gradually and correctly and then again lapses into stupor.

Diarrhea: Painless, non-debilitating, involuntary stools with flatus; from terror or foods.

Bones: Beneficial for rickets. Inflammation of bones – scrofulous, mercurial, syphilitic, or sycotic.

Periostitis: Pains are burning and tearing in nature, as if scraped with a knife.

Necrosis: Necrosis in stem after amputation.

Neuralgia: There are drawing, boring, digging pains in nerves of extremities.

Diabetes: For diabetes along with nervous debility in early stages.

Spermatorrhea: Frequent, profuse, debilitating seminal emissions after intercourse, several in one night; abashed, sad; has despair of cure.

Chest weak: From talking and coughing in phthisis, due to loss of vital fluids. Too fast growth, depressing mental emotions.

Intestinal hemorrhage: It is also beneficial for intestinal hemorrhage in which blood is dark; from typhoid fever.

Urine: Urine looks like milk, filled with jelly-like, bloody pieces; decomposes quickly, profuse urination at night of clear, watery urine which forms a white cloud at once; consist of phosphates.

Trembling: Patient trembles, stumbles effortlessly; makes missteps; legs are weak.

Important Characteristic Features

Headache: It is beneficial for headache due to long lasting grief and tired nerves. It is also beneficial for congestive headaches in school going girls from slight exertion of mind and overuse of the eyes. There are bone aches and periosteal pains. Bone aches as if scraped; gets better by motion and lying, the pain shifts to side lain on. Morning headaches. The person is sensitive to warm room as well as to cold weather.

The pain often starts in the back of the head and spread to the top of the head; feeling as if a crushing weight were on the top of the head. The feeling of  pressure of a weight on the head also present. These headaches are accompanied by mental weakness and brain fag; exhausted and tired. Gets worse from physical or mental exertion, from being talked to, light cold weather. Better from keeping warm, being alone, absolute quiet and at rest.

Affections of Urogenital System: It is excellent remedy for Diabetes Mellitus or insipidus from sexual excesses, onanism, shock or sweating. Urine gets milky on standing as if chalk flour or phosphate deposits have been stirred. Profuse urination at night. Urine is watery, clear but forms a white cloud because of excessive phosphate in the urine due to nerve waste. There is a constant desire to pass urine, involuntary urination. In the morning, a few drops of gleety discharge appear in the urine.

Sexual Sphere: It is also beneficial remedy for senile debility from the ill effects of sexual excesses. There is prolonged exhaustion, sexual weakness, impotency in masturbators having nocturnal pollutions with great fatigue. The patient is depressed, sad, hopeless, apathetic and has no hope of recovery. There is prostatorrhea immediately after every erection; discharge of prostatic fluids. While passing the soft stool, the patient discharges prostate fluid.

Typhoid: It is a very typical remedy for typhoid fever. The problems come gradually, are slow to decline and slowly increase the prostration. Such appearances identify the advanced stage of typhoid. It has dry brown tongue, prostration, sordes on teeth, tympanitic abdomen, slowly approaching unconsciousness; little thirst, increase to intense thirst with desire for much water during sweating; wants to remain alone; looks at a questionnaire with glassy eyes as if gradually comprehending the question; pupils dilated or contracted; eyes sunken; continued fever; hippocratic continence, bleeding from the nose, bowels, lungs; hemorrhage from any mucus membranes; discolored lips, covered with sordes, getting very black, prostration slowly increasing.

Finally comes the muscular soreness that increases until the jaw drops and it seems that the person may die of fatigue. It gives relief to those states that comes from hemorrhages and checks the hemorrages, it seldom prevents dropsy. There is a state of anemia, pale tongue and lips; coldness of parts.

General Modalities:

Aggravation: loss of vital fluids, mental affections, self abuse, seminal losses, sexual excesses, masturbation, decreasing emotions, bad news, draft of cold, wind, music, walking.

Amelioration: From short sleep, warmth, pain gets better by motion or pressure.
