Introduction and History: Nitric Acid is also one more of our polychrests remedies. It is a constitutional, long and deep acting medicine. This remedy is very corrosive and an irritant. It is appropriate for acute and chronic diseases. This medicine corresponds to all three miasms and that is why is an invaluable medicine in the treatment of chronic diseases.

Preparation: Potencies are made from a watery solution of nitric acid.

Description: It is a fuming liquid that is very corrosive and contains a characteristically highly irritating odor. Nitric Acid is soluble in water and dilutes alcohol in all proportions. It attacks most of the metals, evolving brown fumes.

Constitution and Physiognomy: It is suitable to lean, thin, debilitated and weak patients with rigid fibers, black hair, eyes and dark color or complexion. Also prescribed to broken down, very weak, cachectic, emaciated and anemic people with an ugly appearance.

Seat of Action (Pharmacodynamics): Mouth, prostate gland, anus, blood, throat, muco-cutaneous junctions, skin, salivary glands, bones, liver, gastrointestinal tract and mucous membranes.

Ailments From: Long-lasting anxiety, some virulent poison, syphilis, abuse of mercury, anguish from the loss of his dearest friend, loss of sleep, overexertion of mind and body, nursing the sick, riding in a carriage, repeated use of Digitalis.

Physio-pathological Changes (Pathology)

2. It works on muco-cutaneous junctions of the body including the mouth, the rectum, the anus and the vagina.

4. Works on mucous membranes; has a particular affinity for the outlets of mucous surfaces where skin and mucous membranes meet.
5. Works on the digestive tract producing hemorrhages and diarrhea.
6. Nitricum Acidum works on blood, causing blood decomposition resulting in anemia.
7. It causes blisters and ulcers in the mouth, tongue genitals; they bleed with ease.
8. It works on the rectum causing fissures, with pain during stool; as if the rectum were torn.
9. Works on the full physical body producing great prostration and weakness.
10. It functions on bones and joints causing arthritis.

Characteristic Mental Symptoms (Psychology)

1. Fear or afraid of death, uneasiness regarding health, with anxiety about recovery.

12. Constantly contemplating about his past troubles, fear of cholera.
13. Person is very sensitive to noise, pain, motion, jar and touch.
14. Irresistible desire to swear and curse.
15. Loathing of life, always sad, depressed, anxious, despondent with great indifference.

Characteristic Physical Guiding Symptoms

Ulceration: There is a trend of ulceration. Cracks and ulcers especially found around muco-cutaneous junctions. Moist fissure of the anus. Fissures of the tongue. Corners of mouth are ulcerated and cracked.

Urine: Urine is dark brown, scanty and turbid in nature. Fetid urine, unbearably offensive. Urine has a very strong smell or smells like the urine of a horse.

Putridity: All discharges are dirty brown, thin, offensive and excoriating in nature.

Hearing: Hardness of hearing, gets better by riding in a carriage or train.

Pain: Pain arises suddenly and goes suddenly. There are sticking and pricking sensation; splinter-like pains.

Desires and aversions: Great craving for indigestible things including chalk, charcoal, stone, fat, etc. Aversion to bread and meat.

Band-like sensation: Sensation as if a band was around the affected regions or around bones.

Weakness: Great tiredness, weakness and debility – this is the characteristic symptom of this medicine.

Skin: Skin is very dirty in nature; ulcers are available with syphilitic, sycotic or scrofulous base. All discharges are very offensive and acrid in nature with tendency to bleed. Warts, condylomata bleed with ease on slight touch with splinter-like pains.

Sensitiveness: Great sensitivity and cannot bear to touch, slightest jar or movement. Gets cold with ease.

Irritability: Great irritation – mentally and physically with nervous trembling and much sensitiveness.

Glands: Swelling, inflammation and pus formation of glands. Liver enormously gets large in jaundice; scrofulous from hereditary syphilis.

Bleeding: Hemorrhagic tendency; hemorrhage from the intestines in typhoid fever. Blood bright red and profuse; bleeding from the mouth, nose and uterus of dark color.

Perspiration: Easily sweats; then takes cold; sweat is very offensive on feet and in armpits.

Diarrhea: Great straining is present as if stool remained and cannot be expelled. There is a pain as if the rectum or anus were torn or fissured. Constant desire even after stool.

Leucorrhea: Leucorrhea only at night time which is offensive and acrid in nature.

Bones: Ulcers of bones; pain becomes worse at night. Caries of the mastoid process. Softening of bones and Syphilitic bone pains.

Constipation: Inactivity of the rectum; stool in the rectum, without desire; sensation of tightness in sphincter ani.

Coition: Coitus is very painful in both sexes accompanied by bleeding from the vagina.

Tongue: Tongue mapped with red patches; like ringworm on sides.

Stomatitis: Sore throat and mouth; ulcers are painful, inability to swallow anything at all; pricking or a splinter-like sensation in the throat.

Warts: Fig warts with unbearable itching and burning; exuberant granulations.

Restlessness: Great restlessness; extreme and long-lasting suffering from insomnia.

Important Characteristic Features

Oral affections (stomatitis): It is an ideal medicine for stomatitis, acrid saliva, with pricking, splinter-like pains. Aphthous and whitish gums, offensive saliva, raw places in the mouth, putrid breath from mouth and bleeding.

Hemorrhage: A useful and good medicine for hemorrhage from anywhere in the body. It may be from the stomach, kidney, nose, mouth, lungs, rectum, uterus, and bowels etc. Blood is bright and dark red in color, profuse and coagulable. Indicated in the weakness of the body and broken down constitutions because of miscarriage.

Corners of mouth Damaged: Gums are not healthy and bleed with ease. Ulcers on the soft palate and in the full mouth.

Diarrhea and dysentery: A very beneficial medicine for diarrhea; especially prescribed when the stools are putrid, very offensive and green in color. Diarrhea may be because of loss of vital fluids, some virulent poison or hemorrhage. Great desire to pass stool, ineffectual urging for poop. Stool passes in a small quantity at a time, feels as if a large amount of stool remains in the rectum. In children, stools consist of lumps of casein; they are also slimy, accompanied by much straining. Poop is pale, pasty, sour and offensive.

Syphilis: It is suitable for both primary and secondary syphilis, though its application is often called for in the end stage than in the former. It is most beneficial after the abuse of mercury. The chancres (ulcer in genitals) are phagedenic. Nocturnal bone pains especially of the head and long bones. Development of warts and copper-colored spots when accompanied by pronounced weakness, sweat and exhaustion, render Nitricum Acidum a sure medicine. The chancres in Acidum Nitricum increase very rapidly especially along the circumference where the edges are raised. The pains are usually splinter-like, Buboes threaten to pus formation.

Skin: An ideal medicine for skin diseases. Nitric acid has an affinity for the junctions of skin and mucous membranes. It includes corners of eyes, mouth, anus, lips, nose, urethra, and vagina, etc. There are fissures and cracks with pricking, stabbing, piercing, splinter-like pains. In Acidum Nitricum, there is a growth of warts and condylomata, other syphilitic or sycotic. They bleed with ease while washing or on slightest touch. Ulcers at the corners of the mouth or anywhere on the body; ulcers also bleed with ease, they have zig-zag, irregular margins and edges; they look like raw flesh and have exciting granulations. In the acute and primary stage, ulcers form pus and have an irregular shape. In addition, they also discharge a thin, bloody and copious fluid.

General Modalities

Aggravation: At night, due to the change of weather or temperature, in the evening and at midnight, during sweat, from noise, cold, while walking, hot weather, on Waking.

Amelioration: When riding in a carriage, wrapping up.
